The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) is a premier National Professional body established by Act of Parliament to develop and regulate the Profession of Company Secretaries. ICSI imparts training in Company Secretaryship by Distance Learning (by correspondence) enabling students to qualify as Company Secretaries. The Institute provides “Course Material” for all the subjects at the time of Registration. There is also provision for Optional Oral Coaching classes.
The Company Secretary is:
- An in-house legal expert; a compliance officer of the Company.
- An expert in corporate laws, securities laws & capital market and corporate governance
- Chief advisor to the board of directors on best practices in corporate governance
- Responsible for all regulatory compliances of company
- Corporate planner and strategic manager
How to Become CS | Company Secretary Course Details
Stages to become a Company Secretary :
1. The student who would like to join this CS Course after 10+2 has to undergo three stages to pursue the Company Secretaries Course i.e.
- Foundation Programme
- Executive Programme
- Professional Programme
2. In addition, the student has to undergo Practical Training for about 15 months which a student may opt to start after passing the Executive Programme.
3. The Student who would like to join the Course after passing the Graduation (Example : B.com) has to undergo two stages of the Company Secretaryship i.e.
- Executive Programme
- Professional Programme
Besides, the student has to undergo Practical Training for about 15 months.
4. Foundation Programme which is of eight months duration can be pursued by 10+2 pass students of Arts, Science or Commerce stream.
5. Executive Programme can be pursued by a Graduate of all streams except Fine Arts.
6. Professional Programme can be pursued only after clearing the Executive Programme of CS Course.
7. Training: A Student has to undergo 15 months Management Training in Companies sponsored by the Institute after passing the Executive or Professional Programme or under the guidance of a Company Secretary in Practice.
8. After qualifying Professional Examination and on successful completion of training a candidate is admitted as an Associate Member of the ICSI and can use the letters ACS after his/her name i.e. Associate Company Secretary.
Note : Admission to the CS Course is open throughout the year. Examinations are held twice a year in June & December.
2017 Last Date For CS Executive Revalidation Of Registration
Last Date For CS Executive Revalidation Of Registration : The students registration for the Executive Programme is valid for a period of five years. On the expiry of the five year period, it automatically gets cancelled. Renewing the registration where it has expired is done through a process called “de novo registration”.
CS – Executive Programme :Renewing/Revalidating/Denovo Registration
Within two years after expiry of registration
Time Limit
A student whose registration is canceled on the expiry of the 5 year period has to apply for denovo registration within a period of 2 years from such cancellation.
Fees
The fee at present is Rs. 1,500.
Any arrears of the postal tuition fee during the original registration period should also be paid along with this.
After two years but within five years after expiry of registration
Time Limit
A student whose registration is canceled on the expiry of the 5 year period can also apply for de-novo registration after 2 years but before 5 year from such cancellation of registration.
Fees
The fee at present includes:
- Registration fee — Rs. 1100
- Exemption fee for
- Foundation Programme Level — Rs. 500
- Executive Programme Level — Rs. 500This fee is to be paid if the student has cleared this level by the time of denovo registration.
- Paper Wise Exemption fee — Rs. 100 per paperThis fee is to be paid if the student has cleared some of the papers within this level by the time of denovo registration.The amount of fee payable is dependent on the number of papers already cleared.
Any arrears of the postal tuition fee during the original registration period should also be paid along with this.
Exemptions earned in earlier examinations
The paperwise exemption fee is for those papers in which the student has already passed or has claimed exemption on account of getting high marks in earlier examinations or has claimed exemption on account of having other academic qualifications and which the student wishes to carry through the renewed registration period also.
After five years after expiry of registration
A student whose registration is canceled on the expiry of the 5 year period cannot make an application for denovo registration after the expiry of 5 years from such cancellation.
The student has to apply for registration afresh. The benefit of any coaching he has undergone and the subjects he has already passed would be foregone and for all practical purposes he is a student afresh.
Application for Denovo/Re-Registration
The student has to apply in the prescribed form available with the institutes office.

Study Material
A student registering denovo shall not be supplied with the study material afresh. Study Material can, however, be had on payment of Rs.160/- per subject. “Student Company Secretary” will be sent free of cost during the validity period of de novo registration, from the month subsequent to the month in which the student was registered de novo.
Validity Period of Denovo Registration
The Registration De-Novo will be valid for a period of five years from the month in which the student has been registered De-Novo.

On completion of registration, the admission number will be intimated to the student through E-Mail and/or SMS. Students may also check the registration status at www.icsi.edu by using the online services button on home page on the basis of Application Number, Mobile Number, E-mail Id, etc.
Minimum entry requirements for CS Executive Registration
As per , A person desirous of registering himself as a student for pursuing Executive Programme should satisfy himself that he/she fulfills the following two conditions:
- he is not less than 17 years of age on the date of his application; and
- he has either passed the Foundation Programme examination of the Institute or is eligible for exemption therefrom.
