Hello all,

In an exclusive webconference for CAKART, CA Pranesh Kumar spoke on  “How to self study for CA Exams“. This exclusive talk from CA Pranesh Kumar will help all CA aspirants to get important tips and useful guidance to clear the CA Final Exam.
Excerpt of the talk:

I would like to thank Suphalaam for giving an opportunity to talk to the students. Today I am going to delve in the topic on how to self study for CA IPCC and CA Final exams. Particularly, I will not be able to go into CPT, because personally I believe CPT Students need little guidance. But for IPCC and Final Exams, students can prepare on their own with limited guidance from teachers and successful friends as well. I have been in touch with many students in the past 5-6 years. Generally students think that CA is a very tough exam. But personally I think that is not true. I think it is  a simple exam. The only thing is that you have to study the concepts well. And here you have to really put your head down and work. That is the only difference from any other exam. this is coming from a student who has done it himself. From my experience, an average student can pass it. you dont have to join expensive coaching classes.

CA exam curriculum has a limit, the syllabus has been defined. And very rarely questions are asked outside the syllabus. So there is a limit and boundary. And that is why CA is not that difficult.

Frist of all I will give some colour on how to approach a CA Exam

For CA IPCC, there are two categories of students – students who passed CPT and are taking IPCC and those who did graduation and are taking IPCC. The approaches are different in both the cases. People who are coming through Bcom, BBM, etc background you already know 60% of the syllabus is covered. I am not saying you will be an expert in it but you will know it.

Now how to approach the CA question papers.

Generally there 7 papers in IPCC, There are two categories of questions. I am not talking about subjects. I am talking about question set. There is nothing like theory subject or practical subject. In Law, there are theory problems and practical problems. In accounts which is a practical subject has theoretical problems. I am not differentiating subjects as theory or practical, I am going to say theory questions and practical questions.
People generally dont ready theory questions in advance. They prepare in the end. If you have 30% of the questions in costing as theory questions, that is substantial. They take very little time as compared to practical questions. SO you must prepare for theory part. So, whenever you are reading a question, quickly attempt the theory questions.
Emphasis has to be given to the theory part.

how to approach the theory part of a CA subject,

first of all you dont need more than six months to prepare for CA IPCC exams and more than 5 months to prepare for CA final exams. First thing is that get hold of the subject. I mean what all is covered in the subject. For example, in Law, what laws are covered. ICAI may have given you some study material, you should also have a reference book. If you are pare preparing for a subject, you should have always four things –
1. study material
2. reference book
3. success manual of the subject
4. RPP for the subject
These are the four things that are essential. Take study material and see if your reference book covers all the study material. There are a lot of books which dont cover all the topics.  Then, some people may or may not offer study material – but for theory you must go through a reference book. For example for law and taxation you should go through reference books.
You should prepare – gross reading and then net reading and then again gross reading.
First gross preparation , gross read what is covered in the course. You will be reading without understanding all of it. Net reading is understanding each and every line of the paper sentence by sentence. This will give you a deep understanding. You should take notes when you are doing net reading. While creating notes dont replicate the books . you only need to write the crux of the book. For example in Law you should cover all laws in not more than 200 pages. Bullet points are just fine.
Third time again you should do a gross reading of the whole material.  After that please make use of your notes for revision. and notes will max take only 3-4 days. So you will have ample time to revise. What I have heard is that you are not able to recollect evern after you have read it 3-4 months. So, it is important to make notes that can be revised again and again and you can still remember all of it. So for theory subjects, you should read at least 5 times.
How to approach practical papers of a CA exam,
you start referring the study material and reference book. you should go through each problem one by one. You should work out each problems in a new books. And you should complete a problem and then you refer to a book. In examination if you are stuck, you will not get any reference. So, do not refer to the book while working out a problem.  When you are working out problems try to categorize problems in three categories – A, B and C. A is difficult, B is manageable and C is very easy. So when you revise you can just work out category A and B problems. In the third time you try 50% of B problems and all A problems. Fourth time, attempt only A problems.  In the end you just try your practice manual.  This works out very well for people who generally pass in the first attempt, if not in first then in second attempt.

CA Final Tips – In Summary,
1. I would say is the first thing is please change your attitude. Be positive. Any average person can pass CA. It is not that intelligent people attending top coaching institutes can pass. All it needs is meticulous preparation.
2. Be confident. Dont think it is hard to crack. Dont think there are two attempts. Think that it is the last attempt. That is the only way you can use your time well.
3. Another important thing is that have a schedule and plan properly. At least in the last four or five months. it should be as a school stet up . Morning to evening schedule should be very well defined and you can utilize you time well.
Have a clear cut goal everyday on what topic you are going to cover, or revise. So if you do not cover a topic of revise ample number of times you cannot do well.
4. prepare thoroughly, dont test your luck in your exam. Dont leave anything. you should know something of everything.
5. Do Effective revision. Do it 5-6 times. honest reading 5-6 times should do the job.
6. Another important thing is writing tests. while you are preparing you just try to solve random questions from old questions papers. In the first reading you may not even get 5 marks. After a second reading, your marks will increase to 20 marks , third reading may bring 40 marks .. 4th and 5th time you can score around 80. So, that can ensure about 60 marks in your final exams. If you do this, certainly there is no chance that you will not succeed. So, please write tests as many times. writing exams is very important.
7. The final thing is that last 15-20 days you should be calm. you should be relaxed and calm . stay away from anxiety. Try to chill out in the last 10 days. That will help in exams. You might have prepared for eight months, but all what matters is what you do in the last 10 hours in the exams. In the exam dont lose hope when you are not able to do first few problems.Attempt the theory questions first, that will calm you down and you will get warmed up.
Thanks and good luck with your exams.
