CS Professional First rank Holder Interview – Vivek Choudhary
CS Professional Topper : Vivek Choudhary has secured the top rank in the examination of The Institute of Company Secretaries India (ICSI) that declared the results of its executive and professional programme on Thursday.
Vivek Choudhary, a first-year student at IIM Lucknow, has secured the top rank in the examination of The Institute of Company Secretaries India (ICSI) that declared the results of its executive and professional programme on Thursday.
The company secretaries examination were held in June 2016.
“The feeling of seeing the word ‘Pass’ on the mark sheet is a very big achievement in itself as it is one of the most competitive examinations of the country. I did not expect to get any rank. I was really not bothered to check the rank. For me, becoming a company secretary itself was a huge success,” Choudhary said.
The 21-year-old commerce graduate from Kolkata’s St Xaviers’ College said he got the news about his rank from one of his friends who checked the results on the website.
“At first, I could not believe him. Then I personally checked the website to confirm, and to my surprise, I was there on the top. The rank glorified it and gave me a very big reason to celebrate,” Choudhary, who is from Haryana and has been living in Kolkata for the last 10 years, said.
“My first call was to my mother as she has been a constant support and a source of inspiration to me. My parents are my ideals as they have given me guidance at every point of time in my life. Whatever I have achieved today is because of their blessings,” he said.
When asked how difficult the examination was, his reply was immediate. “Unlike most professional courses, CS has a very comprehensive syllabus. There are nine subjects, multiple laws and thousands of provisions which sometimes get on your head. But all that is required to ace this challenge is a commitment, hard work, focus and a lot of sacrifices in terms of social media, parties, etc.”
He said CAT or CS are different ballgames. “CAT tests analytical, qualitative and logical skills while CS deals with applications in various domains of business, like law, taxation, and governance. Both are highly competitive but comparing them is not justified,” he said.
For now, he wants to become an investment banker. “But that is not my ultimate goal in life. My dream is to contribute towards the development of the society through education. I believe education is the guiding light for improved standards of living. If I am asked to define my ultimate goal concisely, it would be to bring out a revolution in education,” he said.
For Choudhary his alma mater, Don Bosco School in Liluah, changed him as a person – from an introvert to a man of values who understands the importance of interpersonal relations. “While in Class 9, I developed an interest in commerce as a subject and decided to choose it as my career option,” he said.
A finance enthusiast, Choudhary is also pursuing chartered accountancy and chartered secretary courses to shape up his professional and technical knowledge.
A movie buff, Choudhary watches one every weekend and is also associated with Dasnagar Freedom Welfare Foundation, an NGO that helps underprivileged children, for the past one-and-a-half year.
“I had taken up the responsibility of garnering sufficient funds for the organisation by actively organising its periodic events and I also taught and mentored five such students,” Choudhary, who also loves to play badminton, said.
Interview of Vivek Choudhary – CS Professional Topper December 2016
Q 1. Hello Vivek Choudhary, first of all we would like to congratulate you on becoming the 1st rank holder in CS Professional.
Thank you sir!
Q 2. How are you feeling now?
It’s a feeling which I never expected I shall experience. After I saw my result, I was very happy and excited about my performance as I had lived up to the expectations of my parents and made them proud. The feeling of seeing that “PASS” word on the mark sheet is a very big achievement in itself as it is one of the most competitive examinations of the country. The rank glorified it and gave me a very big reason to celebrate.
Q 3. What was your first reaction as soon as you got to know that you have secured 1st rank?
I checked only my result at the website, icsi.examresults.net. I did not expect to get any rank. In fact, it was not required since for me becoming a Company Secretary itself was a huge success and it gave me immense pleasure. As soon as the result was declared, I called up my parents and then celebrated with my friends. The news of securing the 1st position came from one of my friends who had actually visited the website to check the top rankers. At first, I could not believe him. Then, I personally checked the website to confirm, and to my surprise, I was there on the top. It was a very different and ecstatic moment for me where I felt that all my hard work and dedication had paid off. It was a perfect gift that day from Lord Krishna. I had to call back everyone to actually share my happiness.
Q 4. Did you inform your parents on phone?
My first call was to my parents simultaneously with two different phones as I could not wait to share the news with them. The have been a constant support and a source of inspiration to me. I idolize my parents as they have given me guidance at every point of time in my life and I feel that whatever I have achieved today is because of their blessings.
Q 5. In this whole journey, who inspired you and whom would you like to thank and make a special mention?
I draw inspiration from various people around me- my parents, some of my best friends and other people as well. I shall specially like to thank my cousin brother who is currently pursuing UPSC examination. He has been a constant support to me, guiding me at each and every step. A big thanks to Ashish Mittal for my success.
Q 6. And who helped you in your studies whom you look forward to.
Since I did not take any tuitions, some of my friends helped me a lot to actually structure the entire preparation. When I started studying, I had absolutely no clue about how should I proceed. One of my cousin brother, Digvijay Kedia helped me a lot with concepts, notes and study resources.
Q 7. Do you CAknowledge.in Site, How CAknowledge.in Help you?
This is one of the best forum for clarification of various issues in these professional courses. It brings together the members and aspiring students. I would refer to this forum for clarification on various amendments in tax laws, companies act etc.
Q8. What was your study pattern / strategy that you followed for CS Professional that you would like to share with your fellow members?
CS has a huge and a comprehensive syllabus which may make it difficult to ace this exam. All that is required is persistence, perseverance and a lot of patience. Never give up.
I followed the approach of smart study rather than just concentrating on hard work. Before I sat down for studies, I shall have a look at the previous year papers and gauge the relative importance of each chapter. CS has a very peculiar and interesting pattern. Each of its 9 subjects is linked to one another in some aspect. Many a times, you shall find many chapter that are common or deal with the same topic. Hence, I chose to begin with Company law since that would have covered more than 400 marks in the examination!!!
Regarding tuitions, I did not take any. I just concentrated on self-study and the study material provided by the institute. It’s important that you go through them at least once. I would use private tutors’ material only for last minute revision.
Q9. What are your future plans now after the CS Professional?
I am currently pursuing PGDM (MBA) from IIM Lucknow. I want to be an investment banker. But that is not my ultimate goal in life. My dream is finally to contribute towards the development of the society through education. I believe that education is the guiding light for improved standards of living and if I am asked to define my ultimate goal concisely, it would be to bring out a revolution in education.
Q 10. You might have seen stress among your peers and friends. So, what did you do to cope up with that stress?
Stress is not uncommon in the professional courses and I believe some level of stress is necessary lest you should become casual. To cope up with stress, I would never think of the probable outcomes or never make estimates about my scores. Stress can be best handled through a proper planning and being regular in your studies. Even after giving the exam, I shall never discuss the paper with anybody and start preparing for the next one. It’s also important that you have sound sleep of at least 5 hours during your exams and stay healthy.
Q 11. What would be your message for your juniors and your fellow members?
While pursuing CA and CS, We come across several bogus facts regarding the employment conditions or pay packages and stuff. Also, there are people who talk about the futility of the articleship/training. I shall just like to say that one should avoid such random estimations. CS is still one of the most coveted profession in our country and has now also gained widespread recognition due to amended Company Law. Just concentrate on your technical knowledge and professional development.

CS Professional Topper-Mahima Kapoor(June 2011)

CS Topper
Name: Mahima Kapoor
Exam: CS Professional Programme
Rank: All India First
MAHIMA achieved success in her first attempt in the Company Secteray final exam, and shares that self-study is “more than sufficient for success in this exam”. She also urges students to choose their faculty wisely in case they consider coaching. Mahima’s father Mohan Kapoor is a manager with a construction company and her mother Usha Kapoor is a teacher, and her hobbies include painting, reading books and watching films.
Q. How did you feel when you got the good news?
A. I got the news in office where my colleagues were very excited to know my rank. They all stood up and clapped for me, and that was an overwhelming moment for me.
Q. When did you decide to take up CS? And in how many attempts did you crack it?
A.I decided to pursue CS as my career when I was Class 10 as it is a reputed profession. After completing my graduation I started with my CS course.I have cleared the Executive programme (AIR 13) as well as Professional exams in my first attempt
Q. Please tell us about your life as a student…
A.My life as a student started from my home – my mother is my first teacher. I started my schooling from my hometown (Satna) and chose the commerce stream in Class 11. In my entire school life I have never taken any coaching or private coaching classes. After my schooling I joined graduation in my hometown and did a BBA, after which I joined CS in 2009. . from I cleared the executive level in June 2010 and professional level in June 2011.
Q.Tell us about your articleship…
A.I have started my Articleship after my exams in June 2011, with Prestige Group of Companies in Indore.
Q. Is training important so as to become a competent CS?
A.Besides being a compulsory, this 15 months training is very important because in the class we only get to know about relevant laws and their provisions but how to implement these laws practically, this is part of our training. To become a competent CS we must have practical knowledge of all the procedures n their compliances.
Q. How do you spend your time when not studying ?
I usually spend my time chatting and hanging out with friends, watching TV, movies and reading books.
Q.What would you like to do after CS – practice or higher studies?
A.I’ll go for a job in a company. But I would also like to do an LLB to support my career.
Q. Did you take any guidance for preparation?
A. I joined Nahata Professional Academy in Indore for CS coaching. I have not referred any other books other than the institute study material and the notes provided by my coaching Faculty.
Q.Your strategy at every level…
CS is a three level course – Foundation, Executive and Professional level. I skipped Foundation as I was already a graduate. My Strategy was to attend classes regularly and be attentive in classes. I gave myself one month’s time for self-study in the Executive and Professional level.
Q. How good are coaching institutes and what to be cautious of if you choose one?
A. As there are no colleges for CS students these coaching institutes are very helpful as CS is a law field, and to get complete knowledge and understanding of our syllabus it is important to have good mentor. The most important subject is Company Law and I’m lucky enough that I got a mentor like Mr. Tanay Kasera who has a good command in this subject. While choosing any coaching we must be cautious about its faculty and regular classes. It is very important that they are referring study material for preparing for exams.
Q. Your message to the future CS aspirants…
A. Good luck, be attentive in classes and grasp laws properly.
CS Professional Topper-Punnet Gupta(2009)

CS Professional Topper
All-India CS Professional topper shares his success mantras
CS Professional Topper : According this 25-year-old Delhi boy, his reason for attaining the CS qualification after having cleared the CA programme — a qualification widely perceived as the tougher of the two — is his penchant for acquiring diverse knowledge.
Soon after he passed out of class 12 from St George’s School in 2002, Puneet enrolled in CA and bagged the all-India 16th rank in the CA final exam.
“I also enrolled in the BCom (Hons) course at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College, Delhi University,” says Puneet.
Out of the three stages of the CS course: Foundation, Intermediate and Professional (referred to as Foundation, Executive and Final Programmes after periodic course revision), Puneet skipped the Foundation level, as he is a qualified CA. The Foundation course stipulates 10+2 pass as minimum eligibility criteria for enrolment. From Foundation to Professional (or Final Level), the CS course is of three years if completed without flunking. However, one needs to undergo training for 15 months to qualify for CS membership.
Company secretaries are much-sought-after professionals in the booming job market and have knowledge of corporate laws, governance, arbitration and conciliation, investor relations and corporate advisory services amongst other areas.
Puneet was encouraged by a teacher, and his family’s leanings towards the finance profession, also edged him closer to a career in finance. Puneet explains, “I stay in a joint family where both my father and uncle are active investors in the share market, so numbers have fascinated me for long.” His aunt has been his guiding star ever since Puneet lost his mother while still in school. “She took care of me and backed me all the way, “says Puneet.
Puneet’s study mantras |
|
After completing the CA, was CS an easier proposition? “I really didn’t find any specific paper difficult,” he recalls. “But I did pay extra attention to Strategic Management, Alliances and International Trade, which is a theory paper,” he recalls.
Puneet did not join a coaching class for CS but focused on self-study, referring mostly to study material provided by the institute, especially for theory papers. For a few papers he found notes by Sangeet Kedia (trainer) very useful.
“Practical exposure is necessary,” advises Puneet. Articled training in the CA course as well as professional experience in the real world widened his perspective and helped in his preparation for the final exam. Allocating between two and two-and-a-half days to each of the eight subjects, he assigned the rest to revision.
Puneet lays specific emphasis on thorough revision, a must for excelling in examinations such as the CA and CS. He revised each subject two or three times.
The cost of the course is Rs 20,000-Rs 25,000. “After completing CS you could join the corporate sector or start your own practice,” says Puneet.

A First Class student throughout, Sneha recently completed B.Com at Lucknow University. Aiming to make a career in the banking sector, Sneha shares that she cracked the CS Finals in her first attempt using strategy and time management. Regular study is the key to success, maintains Sneha who practices Vipassana, a form of meditation, which helped her to focus.
