CPA registration fee

CPA registration fee: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is the title of qualified accountants in numerous countries in the English-speaking world. In the United States, the CPA is a license to provide accounting services directly to the public. It is awarded by each of the 50 states for practice in that state. Additionally, almost every state (49 out of 50) has passed mobility laws in order to allow practice in their state by CPAs from other states. Although state licensing requirements vary, the minimum standard requirements include the passing of the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination, 150 semester units of college education, and one year of accounting related experience.

Continuing professional education (CPE) is also required to maintain licensure. Individuals who have been awarded the CPA but have lapsed in the fulfilment of the required CPE or have requested to be converted to inactive status are in many states permitted to use the designation “CPA Inactive” or an equivalent phrase. In most U.S. states, only CPAs are legally able to provide to the public attestation (including auditing) opinions on financial statements. Many CPAs are members of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and their state CPA society.

State laws vary widely regarding whether a non-CPA is even allowed to use the title accountant. To illustrate, Texas prohibits the use of the designations “accountant” and “auditor” by a person not certified as a Texas CPA, unless that person is a CPA in another state, is a non-resident of Texas, and otherwise meets the requirements for practice in Texas by out-of-state CPA firms and practitioners.

CPA registration fee: More about CPA

If you want a career in accounting, then it’s definitely worth it – think controller, tax advisor, auditor, forensic accounting, or SOX specialist. For these careers, CPA is the gold standard.

For some broader careers in finance, it shouldn’t hurt – financial planner, corporate treasury, financial processes, financial I/T audit, banking, finance recruiting.

For seemingly related careers outside finance, the CPA designation might actually hurt you – operations, strategy consulting, Six Sigma.

For broader careers in finance and operations, the CPA designation is useful if: 1) You’re working for someone who also started as a CPA. The principle that we “like people like ourselves” applies 2) The company sells to accountants. If you want to get into sales, ADP (payroll) or Robert Half (financial staffing) will hire you.

This point is important: The CPA designation brands you as a trusted “accountant” and “tax expert”, in the eyes of the general public. Accountants like to see themselves as trusted general “business advisers”, qualified to answer questions about strategy, HR, and operation.

CPA registration fee: Who are Eligible?

In order to be eligible to take the CPA exam, you would be required to get your academic background evaluated by a recognized evaluation agency in the US and determine if you have the requisite number of US equivalent credits or not.

You would be required to send across your transcripts to an evaluation agency such as NIES, WES, etc. The Evaluation Agency mandates you to send across your transcripts attested by the issuing university to them to award you credits based upon your under-graduation, graduation and professional qualifications. Each state jurisdiction in the US has its own set of rules within their eligibility criteria to be eligible to take the CPA exams. Most states require you to hold at least 150 credits to be eligible. However, the rules keep changing time to time, so do your research diligently.

NIES(an evaluation agency) charges $300 for an undecided jurisdiction evaluation wherein they themselves analyze your transcripts and suggest three state boards for which you qualify based on the credits awarded to you, and in case you are not eligible, they also recommend you to undergo a few courses to achieve the required number of credits. As an Indian student, an alternative to obtain the additional credits would be to enroll yourself with a NAAC A accredited university offering Mcom courses (distance education works perfectly fine). However, if you have done an MBA, you may send across their transcripts as well to receive credits.
