CPA international location application process

CPA international location application process :The application process start like this:

1. Start the CPA Exam Application Process by Selecting a State

You may have learned that there are 55 state boards with slightly different CPA exam requirements, and you need to pick one state to apply. Typical scenarios:

First scenario

You know where you want to register, because

(1) you have been living/working there.

(2) you plan to live/work there in the near future.

2. Select a Credential Evaluation Agency

Note: this step is applicable to international candidates only.

By international candidate, it means that you have taken at least one course in non-US universities. It depends on where you took the course instead of your nationality. For example, if you are a German national studying in the US, you are considered a “US / domestic” candidate. But if you are a US citizen who spent a semester in Singapore, the credits gained from this exchange program need to be evaluated by the evaluation agency.

Once you have chosen a state, check out the list of approved credential evaluation agencies. This is necessary because the state boards needs a third-party agency to “translate” your transcript into something equivalent to the US system.

You can pick an agency based on:

  • Acceptance by the board (most important!)
  • Pricing
  • Speed
  • Service e.g. online status update, inquiry turnaround time

If it is difficult for you to obtain the original transcript required for the evaluation, you may want to pick an agency that is willing to accept a photocopy and verify the authenticity on your behalf. This service costs considerably more but it can save you a lot of time and hassle.

3. Send Application Form to State Board

US applicants

Fill in the application form online or send the form to the state board. Remember to contact your school and request a transcript to be sent directly to the state board.

International applicants

If you are quite certain that the evaluation process in step 2 runs smoothly, you can send the CPA exam application to the state board first. The agency will send the evaluation report to the state board directly.

If you aren’t sure, wait until you receive the evaluation report. If the result is not favorable, you can take care of the missing credits before application.

4. Wait for the Result

It takes anywhere from 1 week to 12 weeks depending on the state and time of the year. Big states such as California and Illinois takes the longest time.

5. Research on Review Materials

It’s a good time to check out the CPA review books or courses and pick one that suits your background, learning style and budget.

6. Double Check Your NTS

Once the application is approved, you will receive the NTS (Notice To Schedule) by email or mail. Check very carefully the information on your NTS and make sure the name matches with at least two sets of ID. You need to bring these IDs to the testing center for verification.

7. Schedule Your Exam

Your NTS is typically valid for 6 months (a few states give you 9-12 months). You can go to prometric website and schedule your exam anytime between now and the expiry date.

Try scheduling the exam at least 1 month in advance to secure good dates.

8. Create Your Study Plan

A good study plan keeps track of your progress and make sure you don’t fall behind.

My book also discusses extensively on study plans and general CPA exam prep tips.

9. Double and Triple Check

Triple check your IDs for verification on exam day are valid and that the name matches with the record on your NTS. You should also check out the testing center before the exam day to estimate traveling time and understand the traffic condition.

CPA Application And Examination Process : To complete your application correctly, it’s important to know the rules of application in your state or jurisdiction. These pointers will help:

  • Be accurate and thorough. Incomplete applications are generally rejected.
  • Make sure the name on your application exactly matches the name on the two forms of valid identification you bring for admission to the testing center.
  • Official school transcripts must be provided. (Note: Allow extra time if you have an international degree, as it may also require additional evaluation.)

CPA international location application process: ELIGIBILITY AND OTHER DETAILS

Eligibility

International candidates are eligible to qualify as U.S. Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) as long as they meet Board of Accountancy eligibility requirements in one of 54 U.S jurisdictions – the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam. (The 55th jurisdiction, the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands, is not yet ready to accept CPA applicants).

Candidates must be able to take the CPA Examination in English. (It is not available in any other language).

Qualifying through a board of accountancy is the ONLY route to the U.S. CPA license. There is NO central professional body in the U.S. through which candidates may qualify as CPAs.

CPA international location application process: Applying for the Uniform CPA Examination

The application process is basically the same for U.S. and international candidates alike. Prospective candidates must select the U.S. jurisdiction to which they will apply, contact the Board of Accountancy (or its agent) in that jurisdiction to obtain application materials, submit completed applications and required fees as instructed, and once deemed qualified, schedule the examination. Any special requirements that international applicants must meet (such as arranging for an evaluation of their educational credentials by an agency approved by the board) are explained in accountancy board application instructions.

Prospective candidates who are undecided about the jurisdiction to which they should apply may wish to review the requirements of several Boards of Accountancy before making their decisions. Contact information for all boards is available at www.nasba.org.

CPA international location application process: Testing in International Locations

Eligible candidates have the opportunity to take the Examination at Prometric test centers in Bahrain, Kuwait, Japan, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Brazil. In order to qualify to take the  Examination outside the U.S., candidates will have to first establish their eligibility through application to a state board participating in the International CPA Examination Administration Program.

For specific instructions on how to apply to take the Examination, please visit the CPA Examination section of the NASBA website.

Common questions regarding the International CPA Examination Administration Program are answered in the International CPA Examination FAQs.

CPA international location application process: Applying for the U.S. CPA International Qualification Examination (IQEX)

The purpose of the International Qualification Examination (IQEX Examination) is to facilitate the U.S. CPA qualification process for those accounting professionals from other countries whose professional bodies have entered into mutual recognition agreements with the U.S. accounting profession. It also provides reasonable assurance to boards of accountancy that those who pass the Examination possess the level of technical knowledge and skills necessary for licensure to protect the public interest.

Mutual recognition agreements are in effect with the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA), the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA), the Instituto Mexicano De Contadores Públicos (IMCP) in Mexico, New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants, and Chartered Accountants Ireland (CAI). This was the first administration to include candidates from HKICPA.

The intent of the IQEX Examination is to test the differences between the Federal Taxation Business Laws and Ethics practices of the United States and the relevant accounting and auditing practices of other countries. The assumption is that accounting professionals from other countries have already demonstrated competence in all of the areas that are identical in both the candidate’s home country and the United States.
