CPA Fellowship For Minority Doctoral Students By AICPA : The AICPA Fellowship for Minority Doctoral Students ensures that CPAs of diverse backgrounds are visible in college and university classrooms. The program’s goal is to increase the number of minority CPAs who serve as role models and mentors to young people in the academic environment and university classrooms. The AICPA Foundation awards annual fellowships of $12,000 to full-time minority accounting scholars who demonstrate significant potential to become accounting educators.

CPA Fellowship For Minority Doctoral Students By AICPA : Eligible applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • a) Applied to a doctoral program and awaiting word on acceptance; b) been accepted into a doctoral program; or c) already matriculated in a doctoral program and pursuing appropriate coursework
  • Earned a Master’s Degree and/or completed at least 3 years of full-time experience in the accounting practice
  • Minority student of Black or African American; Hispanic or Latino; or Native American ethnicity
  • Attend school on a full-time basis and plan to remain enrolled full-time until attaining doctoral degree
  • Agree not to work full-time in a paid position or accept responsibility for teaching more than one course per semester as a teaching assistant, or dedicate more than one quarter of my time as a research assistant
  • CPA or plan to pursue the CPA credential
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident (green card holder)

When is the application deadline for the 2017-18 program?
The application period will open on March 1, 2017 and close on May 15, 2017. Applicants that have applied for the program will be notified of the selection committee’s determination by June 16, 2017.

Am I eligible for the AICPA Minority Doctoral Fellowship if I am receiving additional funding for my studies?
Depending on the type of additional program funding you are receiving, you may or may not be eligible. If you are receiving a stipend from the university you are enrolled in, you are eligible for the AICPA Minority Doctoral Fellowship. If you have received a stipend from the Accounting Doctoral Scholarship (ADS) Program, you may not be eligible for the AICPA Minority Doctoral Fellowship award.

Scholarship Overview: The John L. Carey Scholarship provides financial assistance to liberal arts and non-business degree holders who are pursuing both graduate studies in accounting and the CPA licensure. This award is funded by the AICPA Foundation and is intended to encourage students with little or no previous accounting education to consider professional accounting careers.
Background: The John L. Carey Scholarship was established by members of the accounting profession to honor John Carey upon his retirement from the AICPA in 1969. During his 40-year tenure at the AICPA, Mr. Carey served as administrative vice president; executive director; and as editor and publisher of the Journal of Accountancy. Mr. Carey dedicated his entire career to serving the accounting profession and made it a priority to encourage outstanding students to become CPAs.

Award Amount:
$5,000 per recipient for one year. Payments are sent directly to the school for credit to the account of the student. This scholarship is a non-renewable award.Number of Recipients: Up to 5 students per academic yearApplication Process: The 2017-18 John L. Scholarship Overview: AICPA and RH/Accountemps offer the AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship Award to provide financial assistance to outstanding accounting students who demonstrate potential to become leaders in the CPA profession.

Award Amount: Recipients receive $10,000 for one year. Payments are sent directly to the school for credit to the account of the student. This scholarship is a non-renewable award.

Number of Recipients: Four students per academic year

CPA Fellowship For Minority Doctoral Students By AICPA : The AICPA Minority Scholarship awards outstanding minority students to encourage their selection of accounting as a major and their ultimate entry into the profession. For over four decades, this program has provided over $14.6 million in scholarships to approximately 8,000 accounting scholars. Funding is provided by the AICPA Foundation, with contributions from the following organizations:

  • New Jersey Society of CPAs
  • Virgin Islands Society of CPAs
  • Robert Half International

2016-17 Minority Scholarship Recipients
For the 2016-17 academic year, 94 accounting students were awarded a total of $451,000. These outstanding students demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership and commitment to pursuing the CPA.

Scholarship Amount/Payments
Recipients receive individual awards of up to $5,000 per academic year. Scholarship aid may be used only for the payment of expenses that directly relate to obtaining an accounting education. Scholarship payments are sent directly to the student’s financial aid office on behalf of the student at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
