CPA charge for services and Other details about CPA

CPA charge for services

CPA charge for services: Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is the title of qualified accountants in numerous countries in the English-speaking world. In the United States, the CPA is a license to provide accounting services directly to the public. It is awarded by each of the 50 states for practice in that state. Additionally, almost every state (49 out of 50) has passed mobility laws in order to allow practice in their state by CPAs from other states. Although state licensing requirements vary, the minimum standard requirements include the passing of the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination, 150 semester units of college education, and one year of accounting related experience.

Continuing professional education (CPE) is also required to maintain licensure. Individuals who have been awarded the CPA but have lapsed in the fulfilment of the required CPE or have requested to be converted to inactive status are in many states permitted to use the designation “CPA Inactive” or an equivalent phrase. In most U.S. states, only CPAs are legally able to provide to the public attestation (including auditing) opinions on financial statements. Many CPAs are members of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and their state CPA society.

There are a lot of determining factors when considering hiring an accountant, bookkeeper, or outsourcing the function.

Payroll is the biggest determining factor because of everything that is involved in the payroll function.  Making sure that the taxes are paid timely and the tax returns are filed timely is one of the things that is most important to the proper functioning of a company.  If you can bring payroll in house, this is the most beneficial way to run your company.

Now lets move onto the differences between bookkeeper and accountant.

Bookkeeper: takes care of day in/day out functions like accounts payable (paying the bills) and accounts receivable (recording revenue).  These two functions can be easily combined by doing a daily/monthly reconciliation but it depends on if your business is cash or accrual.

Note: bookkeepers don’t usually do the daily grind of accounting (general ledger, reconciliations, asset management/depreciation, budgets, financial operations, etc.).  If you’re going to require an employee to take care of these functions, then hire an accountant; they don’t need to be a CPA.

Accountants will take care of most or all of the demanding duties of a company except for the company tax return.  This may include the tax returns associated with payroll.

I take care of all facets of the accounting for the company I work for including all tax returns.

You can hire an accountant that does some of the functions or all of the functions.  What you pay them should be based on what duties they are fulfilling.  Whatever functions they are not performing will need to be outsourced.  The less that is outsourced, the cheaper it will be for you.

A accountant should be paid between $15 and $18 per hour.

An accountant with a undergraduate degree (4-years) should be paid somewhere around $20/hour but that still depends on what you’re having them do.

An accountant with a graduate degree (masters) should be paid between $25 and $30 per hour.

If you do hire a CPA to work inside the company, you can expect someone who will demand a wage of at least $40/hour if not more but again, all of this (including the above info) should be based on what they do for the company, not their education or previous experience.

When it comes to outsourcing, payroll will be one of the most expensive functions because of everything involved.  Most companies will outsource payroll and taxes because they are the most “tiresome” for a regular accountant; I’m not a regular accountant so I find these tasks fun.

An outsourced CPA will require a monthly fee (minimum $100/month) that will serve as a “retainer”.  They will then incorporate an hourly wage ($25 to $30 per hour) for the time necessary to keep your accounting done on top of the monthly retainer.  The retainer will allow you to communicate with your CPA several times per month without being charged for “advice”.  The special activities (payroll and tax returns) will garner their own price and will vary.

For payroll, this price will vary based on the number of employees you have.
