- A candidate will be eligible to get the pass certificate of the Board, if she gets a grade higher than ‘E’ in all subjects of internal assessment unless she is exempted. Failing this, result of the external examination will be withheld but not for a period of more than one year.
- In order to be declared as having passed the examination, a candidate shall obtain a grade higher than E (i.e., at least 33% marks) in all the five subjects of external examination in the main or at the end of the compartmental examination. The pass marks in each subject of external examination shall be 33%. In case of a subject involving practical work a candidate must obtain 33% marks in theory and 33% marks in practical separately in addition to 33% marks in aggregate in order to qualify in that subject.
- No overall division/distinction/aggregate shall be awarded.
- In respect of a candidate offering an additional subject, the following norms shall be applied:
- A language offered as an additional subject may replace a language in the event of a candidate failing in the same provided after replacement the candidate has English/ Hindi as one of the languages.
- An elective subject offered as an additional subject may replace one of the elective subjects offered by the candidate. It may also replace a language provided after replacement the candidate has English/Hindi as one of the languages.
- Additional language offered at elective level may replace an elective subject provided after replacement, the number of languages offered shall not exceed two.
- Candidates exempted from one or more subjects of internal examination shall be eligible for appearing in external examination and result shall be declared subject to fulfillment of other conditions laid down in the Pass Criteria.
- In order to be declared as having passed the Class XI Examination, a candidate shall obtain 33% marks in all the subjects. The pass marks in each subject of examination shall be 33%. In case of subject involving practical work a candidate must obtain 33% marks in theory and 33% in practical separately in addition to 33% marks in aggregate in order to qualify in that subject.

Only 52.38% of candidates passed the II Pre-University College (12th) exam in Karnataka, the results of which were declared on Thursday. It is the lowest pass percentage since 2012. The pass percentage was 57.2% last year.
A total of 6,79,061 candidates had appeared for the exams, of whom 5,43,443 were appearing for the first time. Among these, 59.9% passed, while only 22.8% of the 1,05,335 private candidates passed and only 20.14% of the 30,283 persons who were appearing again passed, information of the Department of Pre-University Education revealed.
Girls outclassed boys with 60.28% of them passing compared to 44.74% of boys. However, the pass percentage among both groups was significantly lower than last year, when 64.78% girls and 50.02% boys passed.
Students in urban areas performed slightly better than those from rural areas, with 52.88% of students from urban areas securing pass marks, while 50.72% students from rural areas passed.
Students from the science stream outperformed those of commerce and arts streams. The pass percentage in the science stream was 60.71% while it was 60.09% for the commerce stream and a dismal 35.05% in the arts stream.
There was also a significant difference in pass percentage between those who took the exams in Kannada and those who appeared in the English medium. While the pass percentage in the Kannada-medium was 40.68%, it was 61.41% in the English medium.
Among districts, Udupi topped the charts with a pass percentage of 90.01%, followed by Dakshina Kannada with 89.92%. Bidar finished at the bottom with a pass percentage of just 42.05%.
Business Studies was the subject in which the highest number of students scored centums (2,457), followed by Statistics (2,243), while Hindustani music (two) had the lowest.

The pass percentage in the state for the year 2017 is 52.83, which is 4.37 percent lower than the previous year (57.20).
Tanveer Sait, the Primary and Secondary Education Minister in the SIddaramaiah government, formally announced the news at his office earlier in the day. The girls (60.28 percent) have outshined boys (44.74 percent) again.
Udupi (90.01percentage) has secured the first place followed by Dakshina Kannada (89.92) and Uttara Kannada district. Bidar (42.2 percentage) is in the last place.

- Assessment of theory/practical papers in external subjects shall be in numerical scores.In addition to numerical scores, the Board shall indicate grades in the marks sheets issued to the candidates in case of subjects of external examinations. In case of internal assessment
subjects, only grades shall be shown. - Letter grades on a nine-point scale shall be used for subjects of external examinations. However, for subjects of internal examination in Class X the assessment shall be made on a five point scale I.e. A,B,C,D & E.
- The grades shall be derived from scores in case of subjects of external examination. In case of subjects of internal assessment, they shall be awarded by the schools.
- The qualifying marks in each subject of external examination shall be 33% at Secondary/Senior School Certificate Examinations. However at Senior School Certificate Examination,in a subject involving practical work, a candidate must obtain 33% marks in the theory and 33% marks in the practical separately in addition to 33% marks in aggregate, in order to qualify in that subject.
- For awarding the grades, the Board shall put all the passed students in a rank order and will award grades as follows :
A-1 Top 1/8th of the passed candidates
A-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
B-1 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
B-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
C-1 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
C-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
D-1 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
D-2 Next 1/8th of the passed candidates
