Big 4s Or Peaceful Life

Big 4s Or Peaceful Life

Big 4s Or Peaceful Life, Choice is Yours.

Chartered accountancy is considered to be one of the toughest professional courses in India and only those of us who are pursuing the course would really understand the years of hard work that goes into prefixing CA to your name. But once we manage to clear the final exams and get the degree, then begins the real rat race.

How long do we feel happy about finally achieving the dream that we had dreamt for years? Two days? Five days? Maybe a week? A month? Then what?

Then we slowly forget the fruits of our labour and get engrossed in comparing ourselves to that one friend who has been placed with one of the big4s or that other acquaintance who has got a better package than us. Sure, I agree that a healthy competition is required to work harder and work better but amidst all this hustle and mad race we really forget the goals we had initially set for ourselves or that determination of not falling prey to the rat race.

There has been a very disturbing trend around us which can be seen specially among the newly qualified chartered accountants which Is a rush to get placed with one of the big4s. Of course there is nothing wrong with being employed at any of the big4s but whats wrong is to view it as a symbol of validation, to view it as a mark of how good a CA you are. Look around and you will find that majority of the CA students make working at big 4s as their life goals. In following this herd mentality they lose their individuality.

Maybe you are meant to be the next finance minister of this country after qualifying CA, who knows? But you will never know if you will limit your potential to only aiming for a job at big4s. There is nothing wrong with working at big4s but do not let it limit you, confine you or validate you in any which way. The fact that majority of qualified CAs aren’t aware or willing to try out other career paths is in itself quite a troublesome statistic.

We need to have more personal goals, goals for a more fulfilling life than just a fatter paycheck. It may sound a little clichéd but after all the running and hustle, you only regret the chances you didn’t take, the choice which could have led to a completely new path and which could have given you a completely new story.

I am quoting one of the most promising speech by Mr. Ratan Tata

“ Don’t just have career or academic goals. Set goals to give you a balanced, successful life. Balanced means ensuring your health, relationships, mental peace are all in good order. There is no point of getting a promotion on the day of your breakup. There is no fun in driving a car if your back hurts. Shopping is not enjoyable if your mind is full of tensions. Don’t take life seriously. Life is not meant to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a prepaid card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so worked up? It’s OK, Bunk few classes, score low in couple of papers, take leave from work, fall in love, fight a little with ur spouse… It’s ok… We are people, not programmed devices..! “Don’t be serious, enjoy Life as it comes”

But yeah, in the end it all comes down to personal preference and what we seek in our lives but you will only be able to make a better choice if you will be better aware of different options, only if you will broaden your horizon.
